2:40pm Saturday 14th September 2013 in Sport
CANNINGTON Golf course at Bridgwater College recently held a 9-hole junior golf open competition as part of a series of events aimed at encouraging young golfers to play at a more competitive level.
The competition was organised by the Somerset Golf Partnership Golf Academy, who also held other events around Somerset across the summer to give young golfers experience of playing competitively, in preparation for progression to the Somerset County Junior squads.
The tournament was split into two categories; one for golfers aged 12 years and over, and the other for those aged 11 years and under.
Prizes included golfing apparel and golf balls, and Harry White from Cannington Golf Club, won the 12 years and over competition.
In the 11 years and under competition, Harry Turnell and Freddie Turnell, both from Burnham and Berrow Golf Club, took first and second places, whilst Jack Webber, from Cannington Golf Club came third.
Hannah Abraham, from the Isle of Wedmore Golf Club, came fourth.
Ron Macrow, Golf Manager at Cannington said: “A tour of this nature, played in the correct environment, helps young people appreciate how the game of golf can bring people together. It allows young people to play competitively at a young age so that they are better able to deal with adversity, overcome it and become stronger as a result and to take on challenges at a higher level as they progress.”
