Two Rebels at Riders' Championship
9:00am Friday 6th September 2013 in Sport
THE SOMERSET Rebels will have two representatives in the highly prestigious Premier League Riders' Championship, being staged at Sheffield's Owlerton Stadium on Sunday September 22.
Jason Doyle and Nick Morris will both compete at the meeting, which brings together the top rider from each of the 13 teams that comprise the Premier League, as well as three wild-card entries based on the next 3 highest-averaged riders in the league.
Doyle has finished in the medals in each of the previous two occasions that he has represented Somerset in the Championship; a second place in 2008 being followed up with a third place in last year's event.
However, the unfortunate Doyle was unable to take his place on the podium as he was rushed to hospital having suffered a broken bone in his neck as a result of serious fall in the re-run of the Final.
Morris received one of the three 'wild-card' entries to the Championship, his form being such that his average this year is actually higher than eight of the riders who directly qualified by virtue of being top of their particular teams' averages.
This year's Championship will be Morris' second appearance in the event, having represented Scunthorpe in 2012 when he scored eight points to narrowly miss out on a place in the semi-final.
Promoter Debbie Hancock said: “It is a great honour for Somerset to have two representatives in such a prestigious meeting as this, and hopefully there'll be a large contingent of Somerset fans at Sheffield to cheer Doyley and Nick on."
Premier League Riders' Championship Qualifiers: Sebastian Alden (Berwick), Craig Cook (Edinburgh), Dakota North (Glasgow), Morten Risager (Ipswich), Magnus Karlsson (Leicester), Richie Worrall (Newcastle), Mikkel Bech (Plymouth), Micky Dyer (Redcar), Olly Allen (Rye House), Josh Auty (Scunthorpe), Ricky Wells (Sheffield), Jason Doyle (Somerset), Richard Lawson (Workington), Nick Morris (Somerset), Rene Bach (Workington), Theo Pijper (Edinburgh).
