FOOTBALL: Wellington win again in Toolstation league
11:49am Sunday 1st September 2013 in Sport
Wellington faced arguably their toughest test to date as Almondsbury went into the game having won four of their first five games, but the visitors matched them all the way.
On a firm pitch Wellington kicked off against the wind but settled quickly and were comfortable in the opening exchanges.
Piper then went agonisingly close when his shot hit the post and rebounded into the goalkeeper's arms.
Wellington continued to take the game to Almondsbury but were indebted to Viney who made two brilliant saves to keep the scores level.
Then just before the interval Wellington were stunned when a free kick hit the knee of an in-rushing Almondsbury forward and rolled into the net to give the home side a soft lead.
In the second half Wellington again took the game to Almondsbury.
Piper was pushed in the back in the area after a fine run by Legg and confident stroked home the penalty himself.
Wellington were now well on top and some great approach play saw Piper fire home only to see the 'goal' disallowed.
Undeterred, Wellington kept going and when a deflection reached Piper he coolly lobbed the keeper to make it 2-1.
Wellington remained in control and for the remainder of the game and were not unduly threatened at the back while always looking dangerous when going forward.
Wellington, who will have to wait until September 14 for their first home game of the season because their ground is shared by the cricket club, continue their travels with a visit to Corsham on Saturday.
Corsham will be full of confidence after an excellent 2-0 home win over Premier division outfit Sherborne in the preliminary round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
And with Wellington have won three games out of four a good match is in prospect.
Striker Conor Bryant is likely to remain on the sidelines with a knee injury but James Clough will be available after missing the Almondsbury game because of a wedding.
Wellington: Viney, L Bryant, Porter, Legg, Ellis (capt), Dennehy, Ford, Redrup (J Bryant), Piper, Chamberlain (Holmes 80m), Westlake.
