CRICKET: Busy week for Wellington
10:44am Friday 16th August 2013 in Sport
WELLINGTON Cricket Club’s busy midweek schedule continued this week with a 20/20 visit to Nynehead on Tuesday evening and a visit from London side Southwark and Lambeth Imperials on Wednesday afternoon.
The 20/20 game was won by 30 runs after Wellington made 157-7 with George Hooper, Sam Murdock and Scott Davey all making it to the retirement level of 25; Ben Evett and Ollie Wilkins batted well too for 16 and 19 respectively.
Good accurate bowling for Wellington secured the win as wickets were shared around as each outfield player bowled two overs.
The London tourists just edged a good game the next day as they totalled 240-8 in their 40 overs with T. Burton (60), T. Daniel (67) and W. Packer (60no) main contributors with the bat.
There were three wickets each for Ben Evett and Robin Davies and one each for Jack Beal and Scott Davey; Charlie Davies took a remarkable five stumpings.
Davies smashed 38 as he opened for Wellington but the Red and Blacks were in trouble at 87-5 and needed some consolidation.
And it came from Scott Davey, who made a career best 82no as others got Wellington mighty close to the Southwark total – Paul Short with 24, Robin Davies with 17 and Richard Short with 25 all played well as the Red and Blacks were all out for 230 on the last ball of the game.
