WELLINGTON are back up to third in the league following this 74- run home win over Bishops Lydeard on Saturday when, although the side made nearly 300, there was not a 50 scored or a six hit.
Wellington’s total was based on team work as all eight who batted made solid contributions; Paul Short and Charlie Davies got things going with a 56-run opening wicket stand with knocks of 35 and 34, respectively.
Alex Sparks timed the ball well in making 34 and Sam Murdock once more looked classy when playing the cover drive as he made 39.
Wellington were able to welcome back Indika Weerawarna and he made a more-than-useful 24 in tandem with Scott Davey’s 31 and the Red and Blacks’ effort was rounded off by Rob Moysey and Luke Desave adding 70 for the seventh wicket to reach 296-6 at tea.
For Lydeard – not at full strength – it was a testing time in the field.
In reply, Lydeard saw Sapey with 28 and Taylor with 28 add 53 first up and they batted solidly throughout their 50-over allocation, but they were not going to overhaul Wellington’s total.
Escott, with 54, and Clark, with 34, also batted well.
It was pleasing to see Luke Desave get through a full allocation of ten overs following injury as he took 1-22.
George Hooper took two wickets and Neil Hendy, with three, did good work with the ball for Wellington as they took 19 good points.
l Wellington travel to Staplegrove at the weekend (12.30pm).
