BOWLS: Men's pairs final at Wellington
9:48am Friday 16th August 2013 in Sport
ERNIE Windsor and Ken Brown came up against Nick Channon and Paul Kelly in the final of Wellington Club Men’s pairs final.
Channon and Kelly got off to a good start and were 5-4 up after seven ends but Windsor and Brown got into their stride and had soon retaken the lead. The end result was close but Ernie Windsor and Ken Brown took the tile – Windsor/Brown 23, Channon/Kelly 14.
In the Singles Four Wood Handicap, Courtney Bowden’s experience and consistent play was too much even against the youthful talent of new bowler to Wellington Simon Connor.
Bowden took a big lead from the start and although Connor began to fight back later in the game it was too little too late. The final score was Courtney Bowden 21, Simon Connor 8 – so Courtney is now through to the semi-final where he will play Martin Speakman.
Yvonne Ede and Alec Ede put up a good fight against Geoff Stamp and Ernie Windsor in the Pairs Handicap but were not able to keep up this time and the Windsor/Stamp duo were the winners 24-13.
Two experienced bowlers met up in the quarter-finals of the Open Singles. Courtney Bowden and Bob Clarke are old adversaries and in the first half of the game could not be separated. After nine ends the scores were level on eight shots each but Bowden slowly but surely began to move ahead, playing consistently to the jack to take the match 21-11. Courtney will play Mike Groves in the semi-final.
