Football: Pre-season friendly - Stoke Gabriel 2, Taunton Town 4
9:42am Friday 16th August 2013 in Sport
CHRIS Young took his pre-season goal tally to nine with another double as Taunton Town ended their pre-season schedule with a comfortable win in South Devon, writes Andy Power.
The Peninsula League outfit very nearly took an early lead but Lewis Tasker blocked on the line, with Rodney Marsh being denied by the legs of Dom Aplin shortly after at the other end.
However Marsh had better luck after 21 minutes when he gave the Peacocks the lead, controlling a Jamie Short free kick and turning his marker with a neat piece of skill to run on and fire home. Marsh had a left footed effort palmed away before former Willand centre half Lloyd Beech, drafted in to the defensive ranks in the absence of Owen Irish and Jamie Price, saw his clearing header from Robbie Bowker's free kick thankfully travel the wrong side of his own post. An excellent left wing cross from Lewis Tasker saw Young head in via the underside of the crossbar to double Town's advantage on 40 minutes but Taunton old boy Gary Fisher got his side back in it three minutes later when he converted a penalty awarded for a Ben Mammola handball.
Fisher dragged his shot narrowly wide after being set up by another ex-Peacock Dean Stevens as the hosts made a brisk start to the second half. It was Town though who increased their tally on 61 minutes when Marsh laid the ball into the path of Andy Robertson to convert following a passing move down the left. Craig Herrod rounded the keeper but had to take the ball wide and couldn't manage to find Steve Murray, with Herrod then putting Young through to tuck the ball into Aplin's right hand corner for a 4-1 lead after 72 minutes. Bowker scored a consolation goal eight minutes from time, a long diagonal ball finding him free on the left to tap past Lee Matthews.
Taunton: Lee Matthews, Jamie Short, Lewis Tasker, Lloyd Beech, Ben Mammola, Rob Norrish (Simon Ingram 45), Josh Wadham (Steve Murray 59), Shane Kingston (Andy Robertson 45), Chris Young (captain) (Rob Norrish 80), Rodney Marsh (Shane Kingston 64), Craig Herrod.
