TIVERTON golfer Harry Konig has been selected for the English Schools team for their international match against Scotland.

The 18-year-old finished fifth in the English Schools National Championships at Notts Golf Club near Nottingham, on Monday.

Rounds of 73 and 75 gave Konig a four-over total of 148 on a course that hosted the British Boys’ Championship last year and will hold the Brabazon Trophy in 2015.

The result earned the Tiverton Golf Club member a debut for the national side when they face Scotland at West Kilbride, Ayrshire, in September.

Konig, who finished his A-Level exams at Richard Huish College in Taunton last week, made it through the Somerset championships and then qualified for Notts by coming third in the South West schools championships at Wells.

He can now look forward to an all-expenses-paid trip to The Gailes Hotel, Irvine, courtesy of England Golf.

Also in September, Konig will start studying for a foundation degree in tournament golf performance at Tournament Golf College (TGC).

The degree includes one semester based at St Mellion in Cornwall and one at the Gramacho and Pinta courses in Portugal, where he can expect to play four times a week, practice in between and compete in alongside professionals on the Algarve Winter Tour.

Konig, who lives in Uffculme, will be joined on the course by Rhys Cruse, 21, who also plays off a handicap of one at Tiverton.
