FOLLOWING last year’s promotion of both first and second teams, Ashcott and Shapwick will compete atthe top level of the cricket pyramid for the firsttime in their history.

Under new captain Steve Tinnion, the firstteam starttheir WEPL Premier One campaign on May 4 with a home fixture againstthe very strong Bath club.

Last season’s leading run scorer, Calum Haggett, now has a professional contract with Kent and will not be available in 2013 while all-rounder Jon Brockwell has rejoined Wembdon.

Replacing them are 23-year-old opening batsman Daniel Cooper, from New Zealand, Will Sobczak, a young batsman who is a member of the Somerset CCC Academy, and Freddie Oldfield, another teenager who is a wicketkeeper-batsman and represents Gloucestershire at youth level.

For the firsttime,the club has entered the ECB National Club KO competition and has been rewarded with a long journey to play their first round match against S. Austell on Sunday April 28.

The players have been training for several weeks and are all eagerly looking forward to testing themselves againstthe best club cricketers in the region.
