CHRIS Skidmore has set his sights high for Bridgwater and county-side Unicorns ahead of the 2013 cricket season.

The 21-year-old opening bowler impressed at trials over the winter on the back of a successful time with the ball during Bridgwater's WEPL winning summer last year.

Former Haygrove student Skidmore has been travelling up to Malvern College in Worcestershire for the Unicorns training sessions and after being selected for the 30-man squad he said the dream would be to play against Somerset in a Pro40 league match.

He said: “Training has been going well and I feel really good.

“I just want to play the highest level possible and this is a shop window to get noticed.

“At the training sessions, you could tell the quality of the players was another step up and everyone has a bit about them.

“My main aim is to play for the Unicorns' first team but I will have to take it as it comes and if they give me a chance I will grab it.

“To play against Somerset would be good but I am just happy to be in the squad.”

Skidmore juggles his cricket commitments with two part time coaching jobs and looking at the season ahead for his home club Bridgwater, where he has played since he was eight, he said the team face their biggest test.

He said: “This year is bigger for me and the club because all the other teams will be targeting us and we have to prove we are not a one year wonder.

“Hopefully the Unicorns commitments won't affect my league matches for Bridgwater.”

Bridgwater's pre-season friendly matches continue at the weekend when the first team travel to Chard on Saturday while the 'A' team host Wembdon's second team at The Parks.

On Sunday, the first team host Minehead at The Parks before welcoming Taunton Deane on April 27.
