STEVE Payne was one of the last cards to be returned in the March Monthly Medal at Brean Golf Club on Saturday but it turned out to be worth waiting for.

His nett 63 was two shots clear of the rest of the field on the day and secured him top spot in Division 3. His handicap was reduced by two shots as a result of his excellent play as Payne held a five-shot advantage over his nearest divisional challenger as Gordon Wheelaghan who was second on 68.

The next best scores overall came in Division 2 as Ian Adams returned a nett 65 to take the win. Runner-up was junior Craig Wheelaghan who matched his 65 but just missed out on countback on the back nine but he did complete the Wheelaghan double for second place finishes on the day!

Barrie Tucker collected his second Medal win in three months with a nett 68 to beat Jason Kidley by a shot.

The cold snap had certainly arrived for the shotgun start for the Loxton Trophy on Sunday as the pairs found their way to their starting points around the course.

Dave Lockwood and Steve Bateman dovetailed perfectly to win the silverware as they produced a nett 64 which was the best score of the day by four shots in the betterball medal competition.

Second place was decided by a countback with Neil Barker and Mo Sanders taking it with the better back nine score. Dave Bradley and Gordy Wheelaghan were the unlucky duo to miss out after their disastrous opening hole cost them dearly.

In fourth spot were Barrie Tucker and Ian Adams on 69.

Jim Wotton made light of the wet weather and the temporary closure of the 9th hole due to drainge works to rack up a very impressive score of 39 points to win the Seniors Stableford last Thursday.

Hot on the heels of his recent Winter League success, alongside Dai Wood, he collected points steadily throughout his round with the exception of the 16th were he failed to score.

His margin of victory was a healthy one at four points over the ever consistent Roger Phillips on 35. Phillips won the battle of the Rogers, though, as Roger Blackwell was relegated to third on 34.

One of the happiest men in the clubhouse afterwards was Roy Snell as he found out there was only one ‘2’ recorded during the event. He was the proud owner of that one on the second hole and scooped a tidy amount in the sweep.
