GEMS struggled to maintain their recent good form as they lost 56-63 to Tridant.

The first half was evenly contested by both teams with Susan Bushnell and Amy Witcombe putting pressure on Trident's shooters, but a few errors by Gems meant the quarter ended 14-17.

Helen Martin worked well with Gems shooters to continue scoring opportunities but Trident made the most of any possession and pulled ahead to 29-36 at half time.

Trident increased their lead to 40-47 after the third quarter and despite Danni Keirle combining well with the attack to work the ball down to the circle, they couldn’t turn the scores around.

Players and umpires player of the match was Helen Martin.

Somerset Division 1

Rubies 34, Harlequins 44

RUBIES played away to Harlequins with three of their team missing and Roxy McDowell, Leanne Wegg and Emily Hoare stepping into the breach.

The first quarter was equally matched with both sides taking time to start scoring and with excellent defence leaving the score 8-6 to Minstrels. Rubies struggled in the second quarter as Harlequins came into their own and were able to increase their lead with a half time score 22-17.

Continued hard work by Rubies and some accurate shooting by Lynne Cornish kept Rubies within reach, but Harlequins kept their lead 32-26. In the last quarter with great defence by Sandy Hocking, Kerry Clark and Emily Hoare made hard work for Harlequins shooters, however they didn’t miss and were able to stretch their lead. Player of the match was Sandy Hocking.

Somerset Division 2

Emeralds 24, Minstrels 48

EMERALDS started well against Minstrels who took an early lead at the end of the first quarter 11-7. Strong defensive work from Emily Hoare and Megan Buller who kept pressurising Minstrels shooters to force mistakes.

Emeralds centre court players Leanne Wegg and Michelle Martin played well, with short quick passes into the circle to secure some wonderful shots from Roxy McDowell, but unfortunately it was not enough to make a difference.

Players of the match went to the defenders Emily Hoare and Megan Buller and a umpire of the match also going to Emily Hoare and Leanne Wegg.

Somerset Division 3

Ambers 19, Monmouth 54

AMBERS started slowly with Megan Walford playing at GD instead of her normal shooting position, due to injury.

The centre court players worked well to get the ball to the Ambers end of the court, but with strong experienced defence on the Monmouth team who managed to intercept the passes, Ambers struggled to find the net. In the second and third quarters Ambers settled into the game, but with Monmouth pulling away so much in the first quarter, Ambers struggled to reduce the deficit.

In the final quarter, after a torrential rain shower, Ambers showed great team play and continued to fight to the end of the match. Vicky Evans was voted player of the match.

Somerset Division 3

Garnets 39, Frome 16

GARNETS started strongly with accurate shooting from Steph Riordan and Tanisha Birch, and great centre court passing between Jo Bromme and Steph Elkins. For the second quarter Nick Elkins swapped with Sophie Butt who worked well with Rheanne Lee and Lucie Mcdowell in defence, helping Garnets to remain in the lead with steady play.

With Nick Elkins back on the court in the third quarter, making great interceptions, and creating space, and using small, accurate passes up the court to the shooters who chose clever passes and worked well to carry on the impressive shooting. In the last quarter, the team remained calm, and with excellent team play, Garnets finished the game with a 39-16 win.

Player of the match was shared between Steph Elkins, Lucie McDowell and Tanisha Birch.
