TIVERTON Golf Club starlet Tom Trowbridge stormed to a seven-shot victory in the UK Juniors Links Championship at Hayling, Hampshire.

The 14-year-old shot an excellent level-par gross 71 from the back tees, which included three birdies and three bogeys.

The 71 was Tom's best ever score, beating his 72 in the under-14 EGU Nationals last year.

The round cut his handicap from six to five and he is on track to reach his target of four this year.

The event was part of the UK Juniors golf tour and the field included a number of Hampshire under-16 county players.

Tom said: “It's always great to win but by seven shots is amazing. I didn't know my exact score but knew I was playing well. I can't wait for the golf season to start.”

Nonagenarian Noel Thomas moved into the semi-finals of the men's Winter Foursomes at Tiverton after he and partner David Wright beat Kevin Ruscoe and Dale Flint on Saturday.

Thomas, who is 92 years old and plays off 18, and Wright will now take on either Tony Sykes and Mike Cottrell or Tim Thompson and Jimmy Heard in the last four.

There was also success for two veterans in top half of the draw, as David Jack and Ron Stonebridge defeated Ian Budden and Tim Durrant.

Jack and Stonebridge will face Colin Carey and Steve Buchanan in the semis.

Kevin Harper, Jim Bray, Andy Pryce and Simon Budden shot a gross 58 for a nett 55.5 to win the men's Texas scramble on Saturday.

Eric Cole, Nick Konig, Steve Bazley and Andy Ogden came second on 56.6, with Stuart Moore, Cliff Hagley, Craig Aitchison and Pete Guest third on 57.4.

Xanda Vass carded 37 points to win the ladies' rearranged December Stableford on Wednesday.

The 36-handicapper finished five ahead of Angela Short in the Bronze Division.

Stacey Ford claimed the Silver Division prize with 36, pipping Teresa Birchmore by one.

Jo Lloyd-Davies won the nine-hole competition with 16, beating Julie Hasell on a countback.
