FOOTBALL: Wellington win again
9:16am Thursday 28th February 2013 in Sport
WELLINGTON’S climb away from the bottom of the table is turning into a climb towards mid-table as they stretched their unbeaten run to four matches with a 2-0 victory over Portishead at the Playing Field last night.
Despite playing their sixth game in only 19 days, Jamie Ward’s side continued their resurgence and made it 13 points out of a possible 18 in that busy spell.
Particularly pleasing is the way they have tightened up defensively and another clean sheet meant they have only conceded four goals in their last half-dozen fixtures – having shipped 13 in the three matches before them.
Wellington went ahead midway through the first half when Joe Holmes, recalled in midfield, played the ball over the top of the Portishead defence for striker Kyle Bassett to run on and coolly lob keeper Mike Bawn.
The home side’s defensive qualities were typified just before the break when a cross found the visitors’ Sam Trueman in a dangerous position but youngster Tom Ellis produced a last gasp-block.
And that proved to be the closest Portishead came to reducing the arrears as they failed to trouble home keeper Jake Viney in the second half.
Indeed, it was Wellington who had the final say in the dying minutes with Darren Rice sending substitute Corey Lewis racing clear to produce a clinical finish past Bawn.
Wellington: Jake Viney, Tom Ellis, Scott Holland, Martin White, Jack Adams, Nicky Ford, Andy Butler, Joe Holmes, Darren Rice, Kyle Bassett, Luke Redrup. Substitutes: Corey Lewis and Max Westlake (used); Joe Chamberlain (not used). Match sponsor: Tonegate Motors. Attendance: 41.
