Burnham United 2, Castle Cary 1

BURNHAM United bounced back from last week's defeat to record their fourth win in the last six games.

Warren Whitfield and Steve Leaf were looking dangerous down the flanks supported well by fullbacks Dave Bidgood and Elliot Lamb.

For all their possession, United were unable to capitalise as their could not find a penetrating pass until Ed Lamb combined with Craig Hirons who fed the ever dangerous Matt Scott who selflessly played an excellent through ball for Arran Hardwidge to coolly slot home on his first team debut start and follow up his goal as substitute last week.

United should have gone on to dominate but instead found themselves coming under pressure although James Cannard and Russ Holley were able to deal with any attacks.

After the break, United were looking threatening as Matt Scott and Hardwidge worked hard to create chances but it was Castle Cary who equalised from the penalty spot after an innocuous challenge by Holley.

This would have unsettled United in previous months but this week they showed a growing confidence in the squad as they re-organised themselves and found a solution to the difficulty uncompromising visitors.

Elliott Lamb broke down the left and linked up with Claude Bitton and the ball was fed to Scott who made an exceptional run and for the second time unselfishly crossed when a shot was on and the oncoming Ed Lamb headed home from close range to seal the win.

Manager Luke Hussey said: “It was not our greatest performance but it was good to see us work out a way to beat a team when not playing at our best.

“The confidence and trust within the squad is growing week by week and this was reflected in this result.”
