Double win for Burnham hockey players
BURNHAM Ladies produced a double boost towards their promotion hopes this weekend when they won twice against White Eagles and Taunton Civil Service.
The team won 2-1 on Saturday after starting brightly and they were better prepared at the back with Sian Kelly back in goal looked assured for most of the match.
Nicky Glanville and Sue Solomon had terrific games in the centre of defence which allowed Sam Course and Sarah Johnson to bomb on supporting the attack.Ali Evely and Carly Bush showed strength and determination in midfield and the tenacious Louise Peace provided plenty of options down the right.
They were rewarded with both goals in the first half, both coming from flying winger Kerry Harvey. Eagles pulled one back right on half time but Burnham re grouped and showed tremendous character during a tough second half to protect their slim lead. Player of the match was Sue Solomon.
Then on Sunday, Burnham stretched their lead at the top of the table to four points after a 2-0 win over Taunton.
Burnham took the lead through the excellent Kerry Harvey who produced a clever reverse stick flick to beat the keeper at her near post.Alannah Frost hit the post before June England just failed to connect with super crosses from Sarah Johnson and Louise Peace. Harvey stole the show though and her work rate resulted in a short corner which saw Tracey Dunn's strike saved, the rebound fell to Frost who passed to Johnson to slip home to finally register her first of the season.
Player of the match was Kerry Harvey. Sponsored by The Rosewood PH.
Burnham's next match is on Saturday away to Taw Valley.
