FOOTBALL: Wellington claim another point in Toolstation league
WELLINGTON extended their unbeaten run to three matches thanks to a 1-1 draw with Almondsbury UWE at the Playing Field yesterday.
And although they were unable to complete a hat-trick of victories, they will have been heartened to have moved another place away from the foot of the table – leapfrogging Warminster who lost 3-1 at home to Bradford Town.
Jamie Ward’s side – looking to build on fine wins away to Calne and at home to Cribbs Friends Life – got off to a flying start by taking the lead after only four minutes.
Striker Corey Lewis pounced on a loose ball and brought it under control before drilling a low shot past keeper Chris Coles and just inside the post.
There was never much to choose between the sides for the rest of the first half on a tricky surface although Wellington should have increased their lead just before the break when Lewis cleverly played in strike partner Kyle Bassett but he was denied by Coles.
Almondsbury equalised after 64 minutes when home defender Jack Adams upended Simon McElroy, who picked himself up to send keeper Jake Viney the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Wellington had the better chances to score the winner with the hard-working Bassett firing a close-range scissor-kick wide of the target and then being denied by a last-gasp block when he looked certain to score.
