WELLINGTON continued their resurgence under manager Jamie Ward with a second cracking win in five days at the Playing Field last night.

The 2-1 victory over Cribbs Friends Life gave them quick revenge for their 1-0 defeat by the league newcomers in Bristol only a week earlier.

It was a similar game to the recent meeting of the teams in Bristol – played at a high tempo with chances few and far between.

Wellington keeper Jake Viney, who has been a superb acquisition, kept the scoreline blank with a spectacular flying save from Cribbs’ Jordan Yeo after 40 minutes but Yeo was not to be denied and put the visitors ahead just before the interval.

A free-kick played into the area was headed on by Mitch Cavanagh and Yeo waited for the ball to drop before looping his shot into the net.

Wellington, who worked so hard in their 2-0 victory at Calne last Saturday, maintained the momentum to take a grip on the game with two goals in four minutes after the break.

They drew level after 66 minutes when a scintillating run by Corey Lewis ended with the striker being brought down just outside the area and defender Jack Adams stepped up to fire the resulting free-kick low past keeper Matt Turner.

Shortly afterwards it was 2-1 as the ball was swung out to young Luke Redrup on the left and his low cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Kavanagh.

That seemed to take the wind out of Cribbs’ sails as Wellington, who again defended well, kept them comfortably at bay and indeed almost increased their lead further when Kyle Bassett was put clear with five minutes left but shot wide of the target.

Wellington: Jake Viney, Tom Ellis, Scott Holland, Tim Legg, Jack Adams, Nicky Ford, Andy Butler, Ollie Chamberlain, Luke Redrup, Kyle Bassett, Corey Lewis. Substitutes: Joe Holmes and Max Westlake (used); Martin White (not used). Match sponsor: Walford Security. Attendance: 48.
