TRAMPOLINING: Great success for Wellington Whirlwinds

WELLINGTON Whirlwinds bounced their way into 2013 with some outstanding performances at a national qualifying gala in Gillingham, Kent, at the weekend.

Eight competitors took part in the trampoline and double mini trampoline (DMT) events and enjoyed great success On Saturday in the DMT Becky Jarrett (24) took gold in the Ladies’ National C (Over-19) category while Sunny-Laverne Sharp (15) competed in National C (Under-19) girls.

Both qualified for the British championships in Birmingham in July and earned the right to take part in Figure B events in future.

Jasmine Chapman (14), competing in National C (U-19) ladies, and Christan Briffa (13), competing in National C (U-15) boys, also qualified for the championships.

This 100% qualifying ratio for the British championships in the first of six qualifying rounds between January and June 2013 is an exceptional achievement for the club.

In the trampoline discipline on Sunday there was more success when Natasha Hodnett (16), competing in Ladies National C (U-19), also qualified for the championships and was upgraded to Figure B status.

In addition Jasmine Chapman completed two excellent routines in National C (U-17 ladies).

Bethan Stacey and Miles Cawood, both competing in trampoline in their first national gala, and Zoe Clarke competing in DMT, also performed well.

Head coach Jason Richardson said: “This is the biggest early season success the club has ever had. “Last year we took seven competitors to the British championships in total from the six qualifying events. This year we already have five competitors qualifying in the first event. “This is the start of a very exciting season for the Whirlwinds, and all those who took part in the event this weekend should be very proud of their achievements.”

Whirlwinds opened in 2005 as a small, independent club. Since then it has grown and now coaches approximately 100 children and adults – aged from 3 to 53 – every week. With a team of very experienced and dedicated coaches the club is achieving higher standards every year.

It is a leading club in trampoline in the South- West and one of the leading clubs in DMT country.
