LION Cubs are the only Division C team left in the Sampford Peverell and district league’s knockout cup following their victory over Redwoods in the second round.

Results: Elmore Club 378, Lumberjacks 361; Lion Cubs 460, Redwoods 427; Hare & Hounds 316, Oggies 314; Barley Knockons 363, All Blacks 321; Crossways 410, Merriemeade 429; Globe Appley 385, Castaways 381; Barmy Army 399, Bellies 430; Calverleigh 395, Welcome Rebels 402.

Highest scores: 70 – J Reed (Lion Cubs, 3 spares); 67 – L Williams (Globe Appley, 3 spares); 66 – D James (Welcome Rebels, 3 spares).

Reports: Though Elmore Club took the first leg by 12, Lumberjacks went ahead after the second to give themselves a chance. But you can never write off Elmore and they built up enough pins to take the victory.

Lion Cubs took the initiative from the start, putting Redwoods on the back foot, and ran out comfortable winners.

A very close game took place as Hare & Hounds just managed to beat Oggies. Neither team could establish much of a lead, and it all came down to the last leg.

Barley Knockons made the most of home alley advantage, as they won five out of the six legs against All Blacks who were never in the game.

Crossways started off pulling 11 pins in the first leg against Merriemeade and after three legs were still 12 pins up. But Merriemeade, led by their captain and man- of-the-match Dean Capel with a 2-spare 65, took the last three legs for a comfortable victory.

Another very close game took place between Globe Appley and Castaways. Globe charged into a 17-pin lead after two legs but their opponents were not down and out by a long way and fought back strongly to lose by just four pins.

Barmy Army won the first two legs against Bellies to go nine pins ahead, but then the visitors gradually started to pull away. They hammered their advantage home in the last leg which they won by 21.

The game between Calverleigh and Welcome Rebels was essentially decided in the first leg, which Rebels’ way. Though Calverleigh won all but one of the following legs, they could not claw back quite enough pins.

Quarter-final draw: Barley Knockons v Globe Appley; Merriemeade v Bellies; Welcome Rebels v Lion Cubs; Elmore Club v Hare & Hounds.
