Mike Allen produced a stunning net 61 to win the first Seniors Medal of 2013 at Brean Golf Club and with it denied Seniors Captain Tony Roper a well overdue Medal victory. Roper returned a net 65 and looked for a long while to be heading to his first Medal win in over a year but Allen in the last group out on the course gazumped him with his spectacular effort. Not surprisingly both players saw their handicaps cut as the next best score on the day was from Roger Phillips with a net 70.

A cold wind and ice cold blasts of rain greeted the players who braved the conditions to compete in the Pairs Aggregate Medal on Saturday. The only player to break par on a tough day for scoring was Matt Haskins who handed in a net 69. Unfortunately for Haskins his partner, Steve Mason, couldn't quite match that score and his 77 gave them a total of 146 for a third place finish. Runners up just edging them on countback were the Jones brothers who rued missed putts on the last green as they dipped out by a single shot. The winners were Captain Elect Brian Read who returned an excellent score of 70 and was ably backed up by Dave Lockwood with a 75 giving them the advantage over the other pairs.

The Monthly Stableford on Sunday was blessed with some much better weather. The overnight frost luckily was not severe enough to bring the temporary greens into use and the bright sunny day brought with it some low scoring. Andy Thomas was the Division One winner with a superb best of the day 42 points, although this could have been much better if it wasn't for a stuttering finish. Stuart Wills was the runner up on 38 just ahead of Steve Jones. Division Two saw three players top the 40 point mark as Paul McLanaghan, Jerry Brueford and Dave Lockwood all carded 41. After the countback rules were applied McLanaghan took the win from Brueford with Lockwood taking the third spot. The lower Division players did not find things quite so easy as the rest and Tony Romeo's card of just 33 points was good enough for the victory.

The Brean Professionals suffered a disappointing start to 2013 as they contested the first G&S PGA Medal of 2013 at Minchinhampton Old Course last Wednesday. Andrew March was the best of them with a 74 which still left him well down the field, Roy Baker handed in a 76 whilst a far from fully fit David Haines handed in an 80 as he battled round with his bad back. Next Wednesday if the weather allows they will be tackling the Championship Course at Burnham and Berrow.
