Bridgwater Town bag Alex Rigley signing

FOLLOWING last week’s announcement that signings would be on the cards at Bridgwater Town, they have strengthened their squad by bringing in Alex Rigley (pictured).

Rigley is an attacking leftsided midfielder who has joined from Toolstation League side Gillingham Town.

He comes from Swindon and has played at a higher level than Bridgwater in recent seasons and was once on the books at Swindon Town but, due to personal reasons, dropped a few levels while things sorted themselves out.

In last week’s Mercury, joint boss Kevin Milsom said new additions were needed to help the squad cope with a hectic fixture schedule over the next few months.

It’s great that our club can attract players with such experience into the ranks although inevitably it will mean a player that battled in the previous six victory run of from will miss out. This brings me to the point of this comment. Good players don’t suddenly become bad, isn’t it time for Bridgwater F.C to appoint a coach rather than constantly increasing the squad on a stretched budget. As I understand it coaching at the moment consists of the 1st team playing six a side in a sports hall while the Reserves train on their own on the Astro Turf. Surely a coach would bring the two together in order to access the current capabilities of All the players available.

Good post, but this is the football backwater of BW were talking about. Where a 50 yard punt up the field is classed as more important than "keeping the ball".
Imagine how bad for moral it would be if the 1st team had to lower themselves by training with the reserves!
Unbelievable.

Thanks for the input. I feared that because I didn’t attack anyone in my comments there would be no response at all.
If this is a football backwater and 50 yard punts up the field are important at least learn to make the most of the ball possession in attacking areas that you do get.
The trouble with training in a sports hall with a small squad is that there’s no way of practising set pieces. The game against Merthyr could have been turned around in the last ten minutes but the free kicks and corners that were awarded were wasted through extremely poor delivery. If you are going to play kick and run football practised set pieces are crucial. I fear for the Reserves, they must be next to go.

Indeed interesting if true. I imagine that after the draconian vote the people that weren’t invited to the committee meeting were able to come up with a more appropriate solution than the axe. I’ve managed to watch a few under 18s matches and there’s no doubt that they are a very well managed and skilful side that play great football. It’s no surprise that a tranche of those players also play for the reserves and have benefited from playing men’s football. Apparently Craig Laird recently organised the reserves for a cup game and remarked that they were “The best group of young talent that he seen since Young, Price, Villis, Kirk and Trowbridge”.
I’ll end on a quiz.
Which Bridgwater Town player was recently selected for England trails and is the captain of the Somerset under 18s. It’s not the sort of thing you’ll read about on the club site. So you can be forgiven for not knowing the answer.
