SIMON Young carded an excellent level-par gross 71 in winning the men’s Meat Fayre with 43 Stableford points at Tiverton Golf Club on Saturday.

The seven-handicapper birdied the 3rd, 8th, 12th and 15th on his way to a two-point victory over Neil Megarry in Division One. Martin Selby also had a gross 71 in scoring 40, having started with 11 straight pars.

Dave Holland took the Division Two prize with 40, beating Roger Fetherston and Cliff Hagley on a countback.

The ladies’ nine-hole Stableford saw four players top-score with 16 points – Rachel Bray, Ivy Radford, Sally Fetherston and Chris Williams. Bray took the Silver Division prize by one from Jo Lloyd-Davies, Radford pipped Fetherston on a countback in Bronze Division One while Williams edged out Wendy Frost by one in Bronze Division Two.

Tiverton provided seven of the 20 girls who took part in an end-of-season fun competition at Exeter and they filled five of the top six places.

The event was reduced to eight holes due to the conditions and Maddy Esau won it with 20 Stableford points. Sianne Leary was second with 19 while Hannah Carthew, Bronwyn Ayre and Grace Jackson all scored 18.

The club’s social committee has announced that tickets for the New Year’s Eve Party, which is for members and friends and will help raise funds for the junior section, must be bought by Saturday, December 22.

n PADBROOK Park’s Summer singles champion Phil Moore was brought down to earth with a first round exit in the winter event when he lost to Mike Partridge. Beaten summer finalist Duncan Hepburn is also out after losing to James Reed in a tight match.

Defending winter champion Martin Cherry also failed to make it past the first round as he was beaten by Neil Woodman. Hong Chau got the better of Will Blundell in the stand out tie.
