PAUL Jones and Matt Haskins both topped the 40 point mark on a day of low scoring in the John Smiths Trophy at Brean but with the Blind Pairs format of the day success all depended on who they were drawn out of the box with.

After everyone had completed their rounds they all gathered in the clubhouse as the draw was made by Club Captain Stewart Garrett. Steve Foy was the player most people were hoping to draw to take advantage of his 44 points, the best round of the morning.

Haskins, Steve Mason and Ian Adams all had 42 whilst no less than six others also scored in the 40's. Foy unfortunately drew out a low score putting him out of the running for the Trophy but when Haskins and Jones were drawn together their 82 point total proved to be a winning score. Four pairs tied on 77 for second spot with a lengthy countback needed to decide that Dave Lockwood and Brian Read would end as the runners up.

The Kevin Davies /Barrie Tucker, Jason Kidley /Ian Adams and Dave Bradley /Roger Phillips combinations would finish third, fourth and fifth respectively also on 77.

Barrie Tucker claimed yet another Seniors win when his nett 68 won the November Medal. Tucker is a frequent visitor to the winners circle at Brean and his round of 80 less his handicap of 12 left him one clear of Tony Richards, who recovered well from a shaky start. Third place was taken by Roger Phillips who, like the runner up Richards, had a poor start but recovered well to hand in another consistent card.

Ken Ponter, Charlie Hastie and that man Tucker again were the winning trio in the Seniors Winter League Bowmaker last Tuesday. They ended up with a 4 four stroke winning margin after they combined to score 134 over the 18 holes. Runners up were Roy Snell, Wally Pape and Pete Douglas on 138 whilst Mike Haskins, Dai Wood and Barrie Yearsley were third with 140.

The first of Brean's Christmas competitions was held last Sunday when the Turkey Betterball took place. After a frosty start, which saw the first 7 holes being played on temporary greens, a pleasant winters day saw some impressive scoring from the 20+ pairs that played. Former Club Captain Steve Bateman paired up with the current Captain Elect Brian Read to return a stunning 49 points. The front nine saw the pair rack up an amazing 28 points with Bateman's eagle nett albatross at the seventh gaining five of those points.

They ended the day as victors by three points ahead of two pairs on 46. Eamonn Wynne and Russell Shaw took second on countback ahead of Nigel Ellis and Steve Foy. The story was much the same for the second of the Turkey events this Sunday. Again an overnight frost brought the temporary greens into play on the first seven holes but another sunny day was enjoyed by the players once the mist had cleared. 44 points was the winning score for Dave Barthram and Mike Hurman as they secured a one point win over Wally Pape and Tony Roper.
