SOMERSET cricket legend Sir Ian Botham is resting after the first day of his 12th charity walk in aid of Leukaemia Research in Taunton today.
Local fundraisers joined him as he walked four miles along the River Tone and Bridgwater and Taunton Canal at lunchtime.
Sir Ian started outside the Marks and Spencer store at 10am and met fellow walkers at the County Ground at around 1pm.
Fundraisers handed over cheques for thousands of pounds to Sir Ian personally.
He has raised millions of pounds to battle leukaemia since he first met a group of children with the disease in Taunton Musgrove Park Hospital in the 1970s.
Sir Ian said: “I know that, with the people of Taunton supporting me, the walk will be a great success.
“Every penny counts and we can beat childhood leukaemia if we work together to raise as much money as possible.
“It's great being in Taunton again and meeting those who have worked hard in their fundraising.”
He is walking in eight other towns and cities in England, Wales and Scotland over nine days.
