FORTNIGHTLY rubbish collections are to be introduced to homes in Sedgemoor this month, as part of a new refuse and recycling initiative for the region.
Around 1,400 homes in Burnham, East Brent and Lympsham will be part of Somerset Waste Partnership's Sort It Plus trials for waste and recycling collections, starting on Monday, May 19.
The new trials include weekly collections of food waste and recycling collections providing boxes for paper, glass, cans, foil, textiles and car batteries - but fortnightly collections of household rubbish.
Extra boxes for plastic bottles and cardboard will also be provided as well as optional charged composting collections for garden waste.
Stuart Kingham, Sedgemoor district councillor for environmental health, told the Weekly News he hoped the scheme would double the recycling rate in Sedgemoor.
He said: "The trials will run from this May to April next year. At the end of this period, decisions will be taken about continuing the new arrangements and, if affordable, extending the best collection options to other areas."

Bins and boxes for the new collections are currently being delivered throughout the trial area.
