Fake notes alert in town

TRADERS and shoppers in Burnham are being urged to check their wallets after fake notes were found in the town.

Traders at the top end of Burnham's High street discovered several forged £20 notes during the last weekend of April when they went to cash money at their banks.

The Bank of England has now approached businesses in Burnham with advice on how to spot a fake.

Alex Turco, chairman of the Burnham Chamber of Commerce, told the Weekly News: "About three businesses in the top end of the High Street have been affected.

"From what I understand the £20 notes were very good replicas and just a darker shade than normal.

"The Bank of England has been in touch and has sent over a load of leaflets stating what to look out for in a forgery."

It is not known which traders have been hit by the fake notes, but there were reports that some pubs might have been affected.

Martin Lloyd, owner of The Victoria Hotel, told the Weekly News he had not seen any fake notes and was not aware of any other pubs in the town that had.

Police have urged people to keep an eye out for any £20 notes which do not appear to be legal tender.

Anybody who sees a forged notes should contact Burnham Police Station on 0845-4567000.
