MP Ian Liddell-Granger, Environment Agency, Steart

BRIDGWATER’S MP says a £20million flood scheme near the town is a “complete waste of money” and should be scrapped.

Ian Liddell-Grainger described the Environment Agency’s plans to create a new wetland in Steart as an EU box ticking exercise.

The plans involve letting the sea reclaim the land at Steart Point between the River Parrett and the Severn Estuary, rather than rebuilding its deteriorating flood defences. Some local people have claimed that would leave properties more prone to flooding.

Mr Liddell-Grainger said: “The benefit to local people would be a swampy marsh that they can’t walk on. In this day and age - when we’re told we can’t have social care, that we have got to cut resources and change the way we do business - to discover the Environment Agency is going to spend £20million because they have to tick a box for Brussels is not acceptable.

“I think it’s a complete waste of money and detrimental to Somerset.”

The Environment Agency says it has a legal responsibility to create wildlife habitats to replace those lost due to “hard” flood defences and rising sea levels.

The agency told the Mercury it was expecting to find out in the next few weeks how much funding it would receive from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which has had £110million cut from its budget for flood defence projects.

An agency spokesman said: “We will continue working with communities and businesses to reduce flood risk, prevent pollution and improve land, air and water quality with the funding we receive.”

Am I missing the point, or does the story not state that creating the wetland was an alternative to rebuilding the flood defences. So now ILG suggests we do neither to save money? I am not sure if he is aware, but there are large areas of Bridgwater designated as high flood risk and this does nothing to reassure me that he is acting in our best interests? I guess that he is unlikely to have a "swampy marsh" in his living room!

The money would be better spent on flood defence work.
Have the people who live and work in this area been given a choice, I doubt it very much and yes there are people who live and work in this area.

If this scheme goes ahead it will be a major construction project, it is not just a case of letting the sea overcome the land.

Also if this scheme goes ahead it is liable to be at the same time as the building if the new Hinkley Point Power station and the new container facility at Avonmouth.

Three major construction projects such as these in roughly the same area at the same time would be too much for the infrastructure of the area to endure.

Perhaps if not cancelled it should be postponed and thought about at a later date.

How would ILG know what his constituents wanted – he did his best to avoid speaking to as many as possible during is election campaign, and was to only Somerset MP not to record any pledges for BBC Somerset……

Ian Liddell-Grainger is a rich landowning Tory who has no interest in what ordinary people need or want.
He is just the latest in a list of Countryside MP's for Bridgwater that will do nothing for the honest hard working people of the area.
He probably spends more time being creative with his expenses now.
