Historic Trafalgar sail mill up for sale

AN HISTORIC former sailcloth factory believed to have made sails for Admiral Nelson’s ship HMS Victory before the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 is up for sale.

Tail Mill is one of mainly Grade II listed buildings which cover nearly 20 acres near Merriott up for sale for redevelopment with property agency Bruton Knowles.

Tail Mill was once occupied by sailcloth maker Richard Haywood whose firm became one of Victorian England’s most important sail manufacturers.

The factory was built on the site of a former water-powered flour mill in the early 19th century and has been extended over time.

The site today has planning permission for 52 private homes and comes with an industrial unit which could be expanded.

The estate will be sold through informal tenders rather than auction and offers must be made by 12noon on Thursday, November 15. Scott Winnard, development partner at Bruton Knowles, said: “This is a fantastic site offering a range of redevelopment opportunities. Tail Mill is also a fascinating building full of history with a range of original features.”

There is a viewing day on Sunday, November 4, from 12 noon to 4pm. Anyone who wants to view the site should contact Scott Winnard or Sarah Eastwood at Bruton Knowles on 01452-88000 or e-mail scott.winnard@brutonknowles.co.uk
