Youth group enters the space race

STREETSPACE in Chard is looking for Space-makers – people who will make ‘space in their wallet’ to give it money or ‘space in their diary’ to join a team of volunteers who work with youngsters.

The group is working in Chard, Ilminster and Tat-worth and hopes to expand into other towns and villages in South Somerset.

Youth worker Richard Passmore said: “We already have pledges of £120 a month and we are committed to working in the area long-term and to the young people we work with.

“Our target is to recruit 150 regular supporter-donors who will give to us once a month, rather than a one-off donation.

“Whatever you can afford, once enough regular donations are secured we promise to employ a full-time youth worker so that we can expand our work and reach more young people.”

The county youth service has had its budget cut by 75% and no longer works directly in the area.

“We have been filling some of the gaps but with more help we can meet the needs of young people in the area,” Mr Passmore added.

StreetSpace held an open evening at the Guildhall last week where people could find out more about the group.

Earlier this summer youngsters went to Chard’s twin town in Romania and helped transform a rundown building into a much-needed pharmacy.
