MORE than 200 people took to the water for the first time at trial sessions Taunton Canoe Club ran this summer.

On the busiest evening, almost 60 novices aged from as young as eight were on the River Tone as part of the 13-week initiative.

Twenty-five coaches supported them to ensure the Thursday sessions were ‘friendly, enjoyable and safe’.

The club is now running beginners’ sessions on|Tuesday evenings,|combined with regular club evenings.

Chairman Gary Williams said: “Taunton Canoe Club offers a range of canoeing and kayaking activities, from sea kayaking, white water, surfing, marathon paddling and kayak polo, with regular coaching and trips held throughout the year.”

The club’s annual meeting is at 7.30pm on October 2 at the Boat House in Priory Bridge Road.
