Flash floods cause havoc on Somerset's roads (From This is The West Country)

REPORTS from residents say that roads around Ruishton and Creech St Michael are now flooded despite the rain stopping several hours ago.

TWO people had to be rescued from a car when it got stuck in floodwater at Curry Mallet.

Fire crews freed the motorists shortly after 2.15pm this afternoon.

Roads in and around the village were several inches underwater which caused delays and disruption for rush-hour commuters.

COMMUTERS are facing travel chaos as the majority of trains have been cancelled between Taunton and Bristol Temple Meads.

First Great Western has suspended its services due to flooding at Nailsea and Backwell.

A replacement bus service is running subject to road conditions. Tickets for today will be accepted for travel tomorrow.

Cross Country trains are being diverted between Taunton and Bristol, increasing journey times by up to 30 minutes.

SEVERE flooding was reported in the Guildhall Lane and Gramball Lane area of Wedmore due to a swollen river, with water up to 3ft deep in some properties.

MOTORISTS have been urged to take care after a number of vehicles got stranded in deep water.

A police spokesman said: "There have been reports of spray and surface water across Avon and Somerset.

"Please allow extra time for your journey and consider if you really need to travel this morning.

"If you do, motorists are reminded to avoid going through deep water – a small number of motorists have already become stranded in their vehicles."

PROBLEMS have been reported on the B3227 between Taunton and Wiveliscombe.

Floods covered both carriageways at Norton Fitzwarren and Preston Bowyer.

FLOODING is causing problems near the junction to Silver Street at Bradford-on-Tone.

There are reports the A38 is closed both ways close to the turn off and there is surface water next to the Blackbird Inn.

Landlord at the pub Phil Anderson said: "We had a little bit of water get in earlier this morning but fortunately not too much. We've been able to open."

The car park at the Willowbrook Garden Centre (pictured above) is also full of water.

TORRENTIAL rain overnight has caused floods and chaos on the county’s roads this morning (September 24).

Several roads across our region are impassable and the Environment Agency have released flood alerts to areas surrounding the River Tone.

The weather system was created in the Azores where a second depression spawned off Hurricane Nadine and headed Northwards before hitting our region yesterday.

With it came gusts of winds up to 60mph and 50-60mm of rain.
The Met Office heightened their weather warning of our region last night to an amber alert for severe weather.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "The public should be prepared for an increased risk of both surface water and river flooding during this period."

The Environment Agency also says there is an increased flood risk this evening and in the early hours of Monday.

There are flood alerts for expected flooding on the Upper River Tone catchment area between Waterrow and Bishops Hull and also the Lower catchment area from Bishops Hull to North Curry.

On the roads, drivers on the M5 are also being advised to take extra care as spray from surface water is already causing problems.

Parts of the A38 between Tiverton and Taunton have been partially blocked in both directions due to flooding.

Various junctions with the A38 near Wellington were also under water this morning and drivers are also reporting hazardous conditions on the A358 at Bickenhall Lane, Hatch Beauchamp, with queues building in both directions due to flooding.
