M5 death crash probe decision imminent

A DECISION on whether to prosecute anyone for one of the country’s worst-ever motorway accidents is imminent.

Police have completed their investigations into the 34-vehicle pile-up that claimed seven lives and left 51 injured.

Crown Prosecution Service lawyers are considering the evidence before deciding whether to take any legal action.

Police have confirmed that officers have concluded their report into the tragedy near Junction 25 at Taunton on Friday, November 4, last year.

They spent months interviewing survivors and witnesses, including committee members from nearby Taunton Rugby Club, which held a fireworks display that evening.

A CPS spokesman said: “We’re currently reviewing a file handed to us by Avon and Somerset Police. We have not yet reached a decision as to whether or not any prosecutions would be appropriate.”

A rugby club spokesman declined to comment.

A permanent memorial to those killed in the crash will be set up at Hankridge Nature Reserve adjacent to the crash site.

Organisers of a charity fund, which raised £6,000 from events and donations, are providing a piece of artwork and seven benches in memory of the dead.

You can still donate – visit any HSBC and pay into the M5 Memorial Fund, sort code 40-46-05, account number 01246860.

Tonia White, from Taunton, whose parents, Anthony and Pamela Adams, died in the accident, said: “It’s somewhere where we can go and sit and reflect.

“I’ll be visiting it on my way home from work in McDonald’s, which is close by.”

A memorial concert is being held at the Brewhouse theatre, Taunton, at 2pm on Sunday, November 4, hosted by the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Band.

A silent auction beforehand will raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity, which enhances the quality of life for serving and retired personnel and their families, and Somerset Accident Voluntary Emergency Service (SAVES), a group of doctors who support the ambulance service.

Prosecute???? All locals know that the many water sources in that low lying section of motorway often cause a low bank of fog in the dip. It's driving too close that is the problem, particularly lorries.

Fog does not produce an impenetrable black cloud as was what drivers experienced that night, as regards lorries driving to close i suggest next time your on the motorway try observing other motorist who overtake lorries and pull in directly in front of them forcing them to slow down to leave a safe gap.

Alot of people follow to close on the motorway not just lorry drivers. What is the point of the police bringing a proscution when they hand out 9 months in a holiday camp for people who lie to the police and the jury.

Lorries overtaking each other seems to be a problem on the m5. I am not sure what 4mph does for them but I joined at wellington southbound yesterday and 2 were ovetaking 3 by the entry slip road and when 4 cars joined it nearly became a mutli car pile up. No lorry driver would do the safe thing and back down.

I live in Weelington and often use the motorway to and from Taunton. Over the 25 years I have been driving I have seen a steady decline in the standard of motorway driving, Most bottlenecks are by cars driving in overtaking lanes but not gaining on cars in the first lane! So many times I could undertake in a clear first lane but I can't. And speed limited lorries driving for miles at 1 mph more than the lorry it is overtaking!
Safety and stupidity are normal everyday occurrences.
I think it is time for road safety/police to mount a campaign to educate.
I find it amazing that a driving test does not include motorway driving and safety education.
I did an advanced driving course and I know this has saved me on many occasions due to the observational training I recieved.
