A GROUP of footballers from Bishops Lydeard’s Under-16s girls’ team gave the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a warm cheer as they left the church on Saturday (June 30).

The players were at their annual campout at the football ground when they heard whispers that the royal couple were in the village.

They ran through the village to the church to see them before they left.

Lauren Smith, 15, said: “We cheered them when they came out of church and they waved before they got in their car – they seemed really friendly.”

Kingsmead student LaurenNorman, 15, said: “It was exciting. I had only ever seen them on television before.”

Aleisha Fleet, 15, said she thought they were being ‘pranked’ by friends after receiving a text to say Prince William and Kate Middleton were at St Mary’s Church.

She added: “We saw everyone coming out but then noticed William and Kate walking the other way.

“I really admire Prince William so it was really exciting for me to see them.

“I was just so excited to be only about a metre away from them.

“When they got in the car I gave them a wave and was thrilled that William smiled and waved back. I never expected them to be in Bishops Lydeard so it was quite weird seeing them.”

Sophie Buck, 15, added: “It was the highlight of my day – they seemed really nice.”
