A NEW community garden in Priorswood was officially opened by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Chris Davies, to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The garden has been funded by £13,000 from regeneration firm St Modwen and the Big Lottery Fund.

The grant from St Modwen, which is behind the £270million Firepool scheme and the £30million Langford Mead scheme in Taunton, is part of a commitment to improve communities and environments where it works.

Sue Kilbey, chairman of the North Taunton Partnership, said: “The garden is something we’ve been planning in the area for the past year and it’s fantastic that we’re at the construction stage.

“Priorswood’s a deprived community in Taunton, and a garden of this nature will bring the community closer together and provide much needed outdoor space for many residents living in apartment blocks locally.

“We’re forming a gardening club which is open to local people of any age who would like to be involved in maintaining the garden beyond the celebrations.”

The garden next to the Priorswood Community Centre has been designed by local landscape architect Steve Swan.
