BRIDGWATER MP Ian Liddell-Grainger has hit out at a LibDem MP for 'trespassing' on the Hinkley C site to visit anti-nuclear protestors.

The Conservative has accused Tessa Munt of acting illegally and being a 'publicity-hungry lunatic' after Youtube video footage showed her visiting the power plant in his constituency.

In the same week the group was ordered to leave the derelict farm buildings they had occupied for two weeks after site owner EDF obtained a court injunction.

Mr Liddell-Grainger said: “Since she got elected Tessa Munt has shown herself to be a publicity-hungry lunatic who puts raising her personal profile well above the wider interests of the community, including those who voted for her.”

He said MPs should uphold the law and she should have spoken to the landowners and him, as the local MP for the constituency.

He added: “Personally, I would have thought her time would have been better spent looking for employment opportunities for her own constituency - where the jobless situation is far from rosy - rather than protesting about the activities of a company which is already creating such opportunities in mine.”

Ms Munt said: “'I am most surprised that Ian felt the need to hit out in such an aggressive manner towards me in the press rather than having a reasonable and more constructive meeting face to face about his concerns.

“It is no secret that I am not in favour of nuclear power, but my reasons have always been about what happens to the waste, which will be in Somerset for hundreds of years to come.”

She added in a democracy people had the right to be heard, which is why she agreed to speak to the protestors.”

An EDF spokesman said they had been granted an injunction against people camping on ground at the construction site.
