THIEVES have stolen several historic plaques across Highbridge.

The oval-shaped blue plaques were noticed missing during the Holocaust Day Service on Saturday.

The plagues, which are among 20 that form the Heritage Trail in the town, were believed to have been taken from Southwell House, the old Radio Station Building in Worston Road and the porch of The Cooper's Inn in Market Street.

Derrick Cooper, one of the Highbridge War Memorial trustees, said: “We didn't realise they had gone until Saturday. They were rather pretty and part of Highbridge's history so it's very upsetting. However, I don't think they had much value - so it's pointless.

“I think they were put up around the town 20 years ago. We had a grant and Joyce Beard, another trustee, went to a lot of trouble to get it done. So, they really belong to the community - and it's everyone's loss.”

Ms Beard said she and chairman of the trust Joyce Curtis spotted a plaque was missing from the outside of the Southwell building on Saturday.

Insp Roger Tolley said: “It's a total nuisance for what is potentially of low monetary value, but has significant value for the community here.”

He said it would be an ongoing investigation and they would be contacting scrap dealers in the area to make them aware of the stolen plaques.
