New Hinkley C transport consultation launched

EDF Energy is considering building one of its Bridgwater park-and-ride facilities for Hinkley Point C on the site of the current Somerfield depot.

EDF is planning four park-and-rides to cope with Hinkley C traffic, including two in Bridgwater, one north and one south of the town.

The south park-and-ride had previously been planned for green fields on the western side of Taunton Road, together with the proposed Bridgwater Gateway site.

However, an EDF spokesman said: “The company is now looking at the option of using the Somerfield site which has recently come on the property market and is situated in an existing “brownfield” commercial park.”

EDF has launched a new round of consultations on this and other changes to its transport plans.

The consultation runs from July 11 to August 12, and public exhibitions will be held at the following times and dates.

  • Monday, July 11, 12noon to 8pm, Sedgemoor Auction Centre, North Petherton
  • Saturday, July 16, 10am to 4pm, Angel Place Shopping Centre, Bridgwater
  • Thursday, July 21, 12noon to 8pm, Bridgwater town hall, High Street.

Makes a lot of sense to me!

I guess that means the Bridgwater Gateway site would also be situated on the old Somerfield site? The article does not make this clear!

Very interesting.

Is this because they appear to be considering the residents near to J 24, or is this because the bean counters have realised it is cheaper to utilise existing facilities where the services etc are to hand. Cynically I suspect the latter, unless they are making attempts at playing lip-service.

I see there is no consultations proposed regards any other of their considerations regards parking etc. So I must assume by that they still intend to annihilate Cannington with their park-and-ride (nearly the size of Morrisons car-park) on prime agricultural land on the edge of the village.

As pointed out though, not clear where Bridgwater Gateway figures in all this?

After reading the above ..does this mean EDF have purchased the site from Somerfield ...
Mr L Grainger MP for " Bridgwater " said when Somerfield announced the Closure of its Huntworth Site said everything must be done to help the Somerfield workforce ..." Thats what he meant Bus Drivers for the Park & Ride " for EDF
I bet councillor Bown will do everything possible to " Help " all the residents of Cannington etc ...She really helped with the closure of the Splash !!

This brown field site will be an improvement otherwise it would have been too near housing and on a green field site. Unfortunately EDF are still intent on building a park & ride facility on a green field site close to houses, on the edge of Cannington village. This increase in traffic will still have to negotiate B/W and use the notorious A39.
