A 16th Century mural of King Henry VIII – which could be of national importance – has been discovered by a couple at their home in Milverton.
Rhodri and Angie Powell live The Old House, a Grade II* building in Parsonage Lane which once served as the summer residence of the Arch Deacon of Taunton.
They believe the mural was painted in about 1533 and may have been an expression of loyalty to the king.
It was uncovered when they brought it someone to re-plaster a wall in the Great Hall which was showing signs of damp.
Angie Powell, who is a children’s author, said: “When we saw the eyes appear out of the plaster it was a real moment.
“It is a presence and you do feel there’s just something there behind you looking over your shoulder.”
The mural is being examined on Friday by Michael Liversidge of Bristol University who hopes to give the Powells a better idea of its significance.
