MORE than 750 offenders across Chard, Crewkerne and Ilminster have met their victims face-to-face to hear about the results of their crimes.
Restorative justice brings together offenders and their victims to talk about experiences of the crime. The voluntary process also sees the offender and victim agree how to sort out the issue with regards damage or harm caused.
Restorative justice is dealt with by the Area West Community Justice Panel and has so far dealt with 750 offenders since it was first launched in Chard five years ago.
The scheme is supported by local organisations including the police, local council and housing associations and it has been so successful that it is being used in other areas around the country.
PC Bill Geddes said: “These meetings give victims a chance to ask questions of offenders such as ‘why me’ and ‘do you know how it makes me feel?’ in a safe environment.
“It can be used for crime and anti-social behaviour or in any case where all parties have agreed to take part.”
PC Geddes added: “It is a useful way of dealing with problems locally. I am pleased it is so well used in the area and would encourage victims to consider restorative justice if it is offered.”
