THIEVES who targeted elderly dementia patients in Chard on the weekend have been branded ‘scum’.
Scheming crooks broke into a garage at the Yew Tree Cottage Residential Home, on Hornsbury Hill, on Saturday night – audaciously taking out an entire window from its frame to gain entry.
They then made off with power tools and electricity cables for mobility scooters worth hundreds of pounds.
Sarah Ambridge, owner of Yew Tree Cottage, which cares for elderly people with dementia, told the News: “They avoided the security system by entering through the bushes from the main road and damaging the property.
“It was obvious that we are a residential home – there are signs everywhere - and this has been very distressing for our residents.
“It is inconceivable that scum would steal from one of the most vulnerable groups of society –the elderly with dementia.”
The Yew Tree has now cleared its garage of all tools and equipment and put further security measures in place.
But the angry owners have also urged anyone with information to come forward.
Sarah added: “The police attended promptly and fingerprints and palm prints were taken, so hopefully the culprits will be caught.
“If any body is offered second hand tools cheaply please alert the police.”
Officers confirmed that they attended the scene and were hunting those responsible.
They urged witnesses or anyone with information to call police in Chard on 0845-4567000 or to contact Crimestoppers by calling 0800-555111.
