Cornhill plans on show this week

DEVELOPERS are putting forward fresh plans to develop the centre of Wellington, including Cornhill.

The historic alleyway in the centre of the town has been boarded up since a devastating fire on December 28, 2008.

But Haunch Lane Developments Ltd and Rayglow Securities Ltd have put together proposals for a residential development in the area which will create 39 new homes for sale in Cornhill and to the rear of Fore Street.

The plans will be on view this Friday (2pm to 7pm) and Saturday (9am to mid-day) at Wellington United Reformed Church Hall in Fore Street.

Residents will be able to meet the architects, highways consultant and planning consultants for the site to answer any questions.

The one and a quarter acre site includes the fire damaged 2-6 Cornhill which would be renovated to create two houses and four flats.

A further 25 two and three bedroom houses and eight one and two bed apartments would be built on the land to the rear of Fore Street, which is currently vacant.

Planning consultant Alison Priestley said: “We believe there is a real need for more town centre residential accommodation but we are keen to hear from local residents and other interested parties.

“Their views will be incorporated into our planning application, to be submitted later in the year.”

The plans will also be considered next Monday by the 'task and finish' group, set up to monitor developments in Cornhill.
