Gulf War veteran in row over council land

A GULF War veteran has been asked to remove a fence he put up around a plot of public land.

Former Royal Artillery sergeant Simon Aldridge cordoned off the site outside his home in Normandy Drive, Taunton, in 1979 and spruced it up with plants.

Now Mark Formosa, Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Taunton, has criticised Taunton Deane Council for telling Mr Aldridge to remove the fence.

The council said individuals cannot take over public open spaces “however good their intention”.

Mr Formosa said the problem arose when Mr Aldridge tried to buy the land from the council.

“Instead of thanking him for looking after it and negotiating a nominal price, the council said he should immediately remove the fence and all his garden effects - or they’d move in and do it,” said Mr Formosa.

“Unfortunately, it’s becoming all too common these days for me to hear how the council is treating people in such an off-hand and unsympathetic manner.

“Here, we have somebody who has served his country and is now serving his community by looking after a piece of ground which would otherwise be littered with rubbish.”

A Deane spokeswoman said she could not discuss individual cases.

She added: “If a resident wishes to buy a piece of council-owned land, they’ll need to go through the proper process.

“The council won’t always wish to sell or transfer land.

“It’s important that open or amenity land is maintained as open space for all to enjoy rather than fenced off by individual property owners or tenants however good their intention.”

I see Mr Formosa has found yet another bandwagon to jump on - I wonder if he would be quite so interested in point scoring if the Tories were still in charge at Taunton Deane? It is very noticeable that he no longer criticises the County Council now his party has taken control - even when they are spending obscene amounts of money on recruiting a new Chief Exec, yet he had plenty to say about even the good things the Lib Dems tried to do. I consider spending 47k on advertising a waste whoever is in charge and would expect MP to be equally critical. Mr Formosa seems to find a new cause in a daily basis and comes across as someone so desperate to win that he will say anything and support any cause rather than a serious politician who would stand up for his constituents against this party.

Get of your high horse Mr Formosa and look at the facts. Mr Aldridge has ring fenced, and taken control of, a plot of land that is not legally his. If he wishes to purchase that piece of land fine; then let him go through the due process like the rest of us. His being a war veteran is a complete irrelevance, or are you claiming that ex soldiers should be above the law. Your attempt at yet more cheap publicity has backfired on you and, at best, made your judgement look impaired

Ah, without Mark Formosa who could you two whinge at. Let us hear all about LibDem policies rather than this knocking copy you seem to be stuck with.
What for example are Lib Dem policies on Europe?
Tell us all that and the majority of us will have a good whinge at you

What are you whinging about verthandi. What has Mr Formosa making a fool of himself by seeking cheap publicity, that has backfired, got to do with liberal democrat policy and europe??. Or are you implying that Taunton Deane council should not uphold the law. Unless you can come up with something relevant to the article it would be better if you said nothing at all

What he has been to the gulf as a soldier !!!

Give that man whatever land he wants now.

Its a no brainer free land for all service personnel that should help recruitment.

If formosa was mp he would probably by that man a duck house on his expenses to go on the land. LOL

If this man was a gypsy I can't help wondering whether Mr Formosa would be so thoughtful and accommodating?

Being a Gulf War vet. does not instantly place you above the law. It does not give you privileged property rights over and above everyone else. There are plenty of Gulf War vets. in this country living homeless, having no access to council housing, let alone being in a privileged enough position to own one. So while Mr Adritch whinges about a tiny plot of land that he has been told he cannot have, maybe he should think of his comrades who have got NOTHING.
