Schools awarded Dyslexia Friendly status

PRIMARY schools in and around Chard have been recognised for the work they do with dyslexic pupils.

Pupils and staff at Avishayes and Tatworth schools are celebrating after receiving Dyslexia Friendly status from Somerset County Council.

The award acknowledges the schools’ achievements in teaching, learning, monitoring, assessment and inclusion for all children.

The county council also trained teachers and teaching assistants to identify and support pupils with learning differences.

Sue Watson, assistant special needs co-ordinator at Avishayes, said: “The status means that everybody at the school now has an awareness of dyslexia.”

Head teacher Nic Gordon added: “It ensures that we provide the resources for all children to achieve their full potential.”

Tatworth head teacher David Knight said: “The school is now at its largest ever in terms of pupils numbers and it is good to know that the hard work and dedication of all the staff has been recognised.”
