Summer 5km Series: Results from last night's fourth race

MORE than 150 runners made their way to the start line for the fourth race in the Summer 5km Series at RNAS Yeovilton yesterday evening.

Jon James, of Wells City Harriers, mastered the conditions to storm to victory in a superb time of 16m02, keeping clear of the sprint to the line between Yeovil Town’s own Tim Hawkins (16m24) and Honiton’s James Denne (16m25), whilst Ian Stott, of City of Salisbury AC, finished fourth to take the Male Veteran title in a time of 16m35 ahead of Yeovil Town’s Paul Rose, 5th in 16m48.

Kieran Young’s time of 17m51 was enough to win him the Junior Male prize, with Exeter Harrier Gordon Seward the leading Male Veteran 50 (17m20) and Castle Cary’s Colin Williams winning the Male Veteran 60 prize with a time of 20m35.

In the Ladies race, there was a stunning battle right to the line between Laura Bowerman, visiting from New Mexico, and Southampton AC’s Amy Campbell, Laura finishing 1 second ahead in a time of 17m18, and Bristol & West’s Emma Reed finished third in 17m46.

Wells City Harriers’ Jenny Moore took the female veteran title as she finished in 18m17, with Yeovil’s Lin Lascelles taking the Female Veteran 45 prize in 19m51 and Anne Darby from Newton Abbot AC won the Female Veteran 55 title with her time of 21m58.

Alice Murray-Gourlay, of Yeovil Olympiads, won the Junior Female category with her excellent time of 19m53.

There was a fair sprinkling of the distinctive Yeovil green and white vests throughout the field, and after the top five finishes of Tim Hawkins and Paul Rose, there was a tussle between Neil Biss (17m55) and Martin Lascelles (18m01), won by the former, with Phil Whaites trying to escape detection by covering up the club colours, but fooling no-one, as he was spotted finishing in 19m07.

Jon Grover enjoyed his run as he finished in 19m19, ahead of friend Sam Harvey (19m37). Simon Ulyett used the night’s wind to practice for running in the land of the long white cloud as he finished strongly in 19m58, just ahead of Gareth Ashmead’s 20m00.

James King only joined the Club on the night and made a strong debut as he crossed the line in 21m37, keeping clear of training partners Andy Windram and Jack Frost (both 22m07) and Malcolm Maxted rounded out the top 100 as he finished in 22m58.

Jo Whaites showed she had recovered from a tough race on Gillingham hills on the previous Suunday as she ran a strong 23m16 with team mates Lesley Nesbitt (24m26) and Tony Hext (24m58) not far behind.

There was a welcome return to Club colours for Debbie Keeble who finished in 26m04, whilst Flora Brooke (27m30) held off the challenge of Adam Hawkins (27m59) and Val Hales (28m28), and there was a Club debut for Donna Smith (29m47).

Mandy Windram (30m54) and Corinne Hawkins (31m14) enjoyed a close race and there was another Club debutante in Tanith Steadman-Lloyd who finished in a time of 32m21.

There was a supporting children’s fun run organised by members of the Wells City Harriers, and in a close race there was an excellent win for Luke Prior, who completed the course in 4m35, with Michael Biss second in 4m56 and Jack Frost third in 5m24.

Ceri Edward was the leading girl as she crossed the line in 5m34 ahead of Jessica Pate (5m41).
