PLANNERS will next week look at proposals aimed at reducing the output of landfill gas from a site in Yeovil.
Members of Yeovil Town Council's planning and licensing committee meet on Monday to discuss the project earmarked for the former disused landfill site at Birchfield Rec in Lyde Road.
The proposal is for the installation of a new bentonite barrier below ground level which will replace a butyl barrier which will remain in place during the intended works.
Planning officer Jean Marshall said: "The scheme will involve the digging out of a trench eight-metres deep and filling this with bentonite-cement slurry to tie into the existing bentonite barrier which exists at one end.
"These barriers act to reduce the output of landfill gas and leachate from the former landfill site."
The work is expected to take six weeks to complete and is needed to be done before the construction of a new acceess road across the landfill site which has been approved as part of the manor Lyde Road "key site" development.
A council report said: "The surcharging proposed as part of the new road will put additional pressure onto the landfill site and these works are considered necessary as part of the mitigation works."
Councillors will hear that 19 residents living close to the site have been notified about the planned works, but no representations had been received by the council.
