THE Silk Mills park and ride site on the edge of Taunton is being converted into a bicycle racing track for four Sundays.

The first session for six to 16-year-olds took place yesterday, with another one next Sunday and on July 12 and 19, when the site will be closed to motorists.

The aim of the ‘Go-Ride’ initiative, championed by Somerset Leisure and British Cycling, is to give keen young cyclists a taste of the sport.

British Cycling’s Dan Coast said: “Cycling coaches will be on hand to guide the youngsters about how to improve their technique, and there will be a series of races for different age groups so they can all get racing experience.

“It will help keen riders step up to the next level, but above all it is about youngsters having fun and enjoying the sport.”

Somerset managing director Tim Nightingale said: “If we are to produce future cycling champions then it is important to provide the facilities for racing and training.

“This is a great way to make use of an existing facility at the Silk Mills park and ride and this initiative is part of a number that Somerset is spearheading with British Cycling to help budding cyclists.”

The racing sessions start at 11am and end at 1.30pm, with entry free to all.

Winners of the Go-Ride races will qualify for free membership of British Cycling.
