PEOPLE in West Somerset could save millions of pounds in fuel bills thanks to the district’s new climate change strategy, launched at West Somerset Community College’s Carbon Fair last week.
Hundreds of people visited the fair to see what local businesses are doing and offering to reduce local energy consumption.
West Somerset Council leader Keith Ross said: “From suggesting small changes that we can all make, like draught proofing and insulating our homes, to drawing in over £2 million from the Local Action in Rural Communities programme to help fund eco-friendly sustainable business, the strategy is already helping the district’s economy.”
The strategy was funded by the West Somerset Strategic Partnership (WSSP) and written by environmental group Forum 21.
Forum 21 co-ordinator Lorna Scott said: “I would like to thank the college for hosting the fair and the launch of the strategy, as well as all the businesses that had stands at the fair, and Minehead Rugby Club for letting visitors park in their grounds.
“The students were fabulous and have a real interest and enthusiasm towards protecting the environment.
“It is good to know that they are actively involved in trying to reduce carbon emissions, which is great news for the future of West Somerset’s environment.”
Loretta Whetlor, WSSP chair, said: “The strategic partnership is very pleased to fund the Climate Change Strategy. “We now hope this important piece of work will result in carbon reduction action by our parishes, towns and business community.”
The council offers various grants and discounts for insulation and solar panel installation.
