WEST Somerset Morris Men are inviting people to try out their traditional pastime following claims it could die out within 20 years.

Last week the County Gazette reported that the Morris Ring – an association representing Morris troupes across Britain, including the West Somerset fraternity – had issued the stark warning following claims youngsters were too embarrassed to try the dance.

And concerns were raised that failure to recruit young blood could see the traditional dance confined to the history books.

But West Somerset Morris Dancers are launching a broadside to save the ailing dance by holding an event, which will include performances from the professionals, a talk on its history and a chance to try some of the moves.

The Squire of West Somerset Morris Men, Joe Raucki said: “The recent coverage of Morris Dancing in the media has created an enormous interest from all parts of the community.

“To explain what it is and to demonstrate how it’s done we have organised an evening at Halsway Manor. The Morris men will demonstrate a variety of dances involving sticks and handkerchiefs interspersed with information about the history of Morris and the current UK and worldwide situation.

“Any men or loads who would like to have a go at doing Morris will be especially welcome.”

The event will be held at Halsway Manor near Crowcombe just off the A358 between Taunton and Williton on January 22 from 8pm-10pm.

Members of the West Somerset fold practice throughout the winter and dance around West Somerset, the UK and abroad during the summer months, often raising money for local charities.
