BY-election winner Kelly Durdan won’t have far to look for advice when she takes up her new role.

Miss Durdan won the two-horse race to represent Ruishton and Creech St Michael on Taunton Deane Council in last Thursday’s poll called following the death of fellow Conservative Gwyneth Leighton.

She attracted 902 votes against 700 for Cilla Owen (LibDem) and takes her seat at Deane House alongside her father, Dave Durdan.

Miss Durdan, 28, has spent most of her life in the area and lives in Creech with her partner, Jon, and two children.

Following the win, she said: “I’d like to thank everyone in Ruishton and Creech St Michael for the support and encouragement I received as I went around the ward talking to people during the campaign.

“I’m passionate about this area and determined to do all I can for the people who live here.”

Cllr John Williams, leader of the Conservatives on Taunton Deane Council said: “I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Kelly to the Conservative group and particularly to have another young mum on the team.

“Kelly showed great enthusiasm and commitment during the campaign and I’m sure she’ll be a worthy successor to Gwyneth, who served the ward with much distinction.” *The result means the LibDems still have 26 councillors, one ahead of the Conservatives, with four Independents and one Labour member. The turnout at the poll was 50.57%.

LibDem leader Ross Henley said: “I’m disappointed we didn’t win, but pleased our vote went up.

“Commiserations to Cilla Owen, who was an excellent candidate, and congratulations to Kelly Durdan.”
